The country, round the city, is very well cultivated, and we observed several vineyands of a respectable extent. On the stubble fields a number of cattle were feeding on straw which has been suattered purposedly for folder. To a custom house officer they paid for their lappage 5 paras = 1,5 penny of British money.
Larissa is pleasantly situated on the right bank of the Peneus, which is here a large stream, flowing under a handsome stone bridge of many arcles, near to which, opposite to the town, stands the house of the governor, the best pubblic residence that we had yet seen in Turkey. The air is insulumbrious, and, during auturn, fevers are frequent and fatal. The pubblic fountains are not numerous, but an abundant supply of water is brought from the river on houseback, in leather sacks, made of entire hides. One of the streets is occupied almost wholly, by Jews, the descendants of Spanish refupees... Several of the Turks here are opulent and inhabit large and gaudily painted mansions. The buildings, in general, are like the shallow’s nest, a composition of mud and straw, which unless concealed by painting or whitening, has a mean and temporary appearance. We had the unexpected pleasyre of seeing a respectable curricle, and were informed, that similar vehicles, capable of going to Salonica, may be hired by the day...
