The Greeks probably in largest proportion, and certainly most respectable in wealth and acquirements. They, too, are the eldest inhabitants of the city; many of their families, as it is said, having been established here for many centuries; they form the great body of merchants at Ioannina; some are settled officially about the court of the Vizier as agents and secretaries; while others, lower in rank, are found in the capacity of shopkeepers and artisans throughout the city.
