[...] the wretched aspect of the modern town, an assemblance of 500 or 600 ill-byilt houses, irregularly disposed, two Turkish mosqes, and several small Greek churches, the latter exhibiting a strange motly appearance in the rude mixture of modern building, with fragments of columns and other sculptured marbles, the relics of the ancient Thebes. The house of the Vaivode is the only considerable building in the place.
