On a conical insulated hill to the south of this mountain, and five miles from Argostoli, stands the castle of St. George, of Venetian origin, and the strongest fortified point in the island: it was at this time garrisoned by three hundred Greek troops in our pay, forming the body called the Ionian Greek Infantry. The town of St. George is situated on the declivity of the hill, below the castle.
