Cephalonia, anciently Cephalenia, the second in rank of the Seven Islands, is the first in point of size. […] This island is situated four or five miles to the S. of Cape Dukato belonging to St. Maura, 10 from Cape Papas, eight from Cape Tornese, and six from Zante. […] The canton of Livadi extends round a bay eight miles deep and two wide at the entrance, and near the western point of this entrance are the rocks called Guardiani, and formerly known by the name of Letoia. […] On the western side of the bay and at three miles from its entrance is the small town of Lexuri, formerly Palla. […] In front of Lixuri the bay opens into a branch running to the S. S. E. for three miles, and on the peninsula formed by this branch is the small town of Argostoli, the most considerable one of the island, although it does not contain more than 5000 souls. This place was anciently known by the name of Cranii.
